The Mystery of
the Runaway Roller Coaster
Six Flags at 3 a.m. seemed an ominous place to be. No longer the bright, noisy, crowded scene you saw at seven o’clock, or even at ten; the shadows and silence were heavy. Two figures moved slowly around the circle of the Silver Star Carousel. The pair could see the beams of flashlights dancing further ahead, but couldn’t tell for certain how many or exactly where they were headed.
A cell phone vibrated insistently in Emily’s pocket and she instinctively put her hand into her jacket to draw it out, but the young man next to her put his fingers around her arm firmly to stop her and put the index finger of his other hand across his lips. Ssssshhhh.
They moved on, around the carousel that seemed oddly silent; the gaudy painted animals almost seemed frightened by what they might have already seen. At the other side they froze, almost in unison as they realized where the flashlights were heading and, perhaps, finally understood what was going on.
