To Register for Classes

Call 817-459-6900, then select option #3 and request the class you'd like to take.  If you're here in the George W. Hawkes Central Library, come by the upstairs reference desk.  You may register up to 2 weeks prior to a class.  Classes have a maximum seating of 10 and may fill up shortly after they are open for registration.  Patrons may register for up to three classes a month, although you may attend classes on a standby basis without limitation subject to available seating.

You must arrive 10 minutes prior to class to ensure your seat!

Internet Classes

Internet 101

Receive an introduction to the Internet with particular attention to the World Wide Web.  Become familiar with the Internet Explorer browser and conduct a simple search.  Designed for beginners, students should have some experience handling the mouse and navigating in Windows. 

Internet 201

Become familiar with the World Wide Web and learn how to perform a successful search and to troubleshoot problems with searching.  Students need to have taken Internet 101 or have equivalent skills.

 

Basic Computer Skills

Basic Keyboarding Skills

If you're not at all comfortable with the computer keyboard, this is a chance to improve your skills.  We'll cover some very basic typing skills then provide time for you to practice.  This is a one-hour session to help you start working on your proficiency.

Windows Essentials for Seniors

Learn all the basic skills you need to use a computer and a few fun things, too.  This class focuses on manipulating the mouse and using the keyboard along with basic Windows navigation.  These skills are a prerequisite for all other computer classes.  Designed for computer novices.  This class replaces “Introduction to Computers”.  Not really different than Windows Essentials, but at a slightly slower pace. 

Windows Essentials

Learn all the basic skills you need to use a computer and a few fun things, too.  This class focuses on manipulating the mouse and using the keyboard along with basic Windows navigation.  These skills are a prerequisite for all other computer classes.  Designed for computer novices.  This class replaces “Introduction to Computers”.

Windows Essentials II

Learn more basic skills you need to use a computer and a few more fun things, too.  The principal focus of this class is file storage and media.  While not a prerequisite for other classes, the skills learned will still be fairly fundamental.  Designed for computer "near-novices." 

 

Microsoft Office

Access Databases

Students will learn the basic features of a database:  tables, forms, queries, and how to use the Access Wizard.  Students will create an address book using the skills learned in class.  Students should have intermediate word processing skills.

Excel 101/201 Combined Class

Learn the basics elements of a spreadsheet, how to create an electronic checkbook using Excel.  As this is a combined class, we will continue with some of the advanced features of Excel such as creating, editing, and copying formulas.  Students will also learn about the sorting features, the AutoSum and the format painter.  Students should have basic word processing skills and be able to use the mouse. Class will run from 10 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m. This class will break about noon to allow students to go for lunch. NO, we're not providing lunch.

Excel Spreadsheets 101

Learn the basics elements of a spreadsheet, how to create an electronic checkbook using Excel.  Students should have basic word processing skills and be able to use the mouse.

Excel Spreadsheets 201

Learn some of the advanced features of Excel such as creating, editing, and copying formulas.  Students will also learn about the sorting features, the AutoSum and the format painter.  Students should have taken Excel Spreadsheets 101 and be confident entering data, formatting worksheets and editing data.

Excel 301 (formerly Excel Charts)

Put some life in your presentations and get the message across with graphs and charts when numbers alone don’t get the job done. Learn how to use Excel’s data series charting and chart formatting features. Students should have taken Excel Spreadsheets 201 and be confident entering data, formatting worksheets and editing data.

PowerPoint

Create a slide presentation while learning the basics.  Students will learn how to create and layout slides, insert images into the presentation and apply transitions and effects.  Students should have basic word processing skills.

Word 101

Understand the basic tools of Word 2000 and practice your new skills in selecting, modifying text and learn how to cut and paste.  Designed for students with basic Windows skills and some experience handling a mouse.

Word 201

Students will learn how to create, edit and format tables.  Students will also learn the basics of manipulating toolbars in Office Suite applications.  Designed for students that have taken Word 101 or have equivalent skills. 

Word 301 

Students will build upon skills learned previously in Word 101 and 201.  Students will learn how to use layout tools, such as columns, borders, and shading.  They will also learn how to insert and delete page numbers and footnotes.  Students should have taken Word 101 and Word 201 or have equivalent skills.

Special Class Offerings

Learn Keyboarding in Vietnamese

Students will learn the standard keyboard and the 10-key numeric keypad and will understand the essentials of good technique for building speed and accuracy in keyboarding..  Designed for beginners, students should have some experience handling the mouse and using Windows.  This class is offered at the George W. Hawkes Central Library. 

Windows Essentials in Vietnamese

Learn all the basic skills you need to use a computer and a few fun things, too.  This class focuses on manipulating the mouse and using the keyboard along with basic Windows navigation.  These skills are a prerequisite for all other computer classes.  Designed for computer beginners.  This class is offered at the George W. Internet Basics in Vietnamese

Just Cool Stuff

Google Earth

This is just too cool ... we'll spend an hour or two looking down at the Earth and the places on it in lots of new and interesting ways.  This free program from Google can take you all around the planet and, with the latest version, into The Heavens.  If you like maps and geography and travel (and the night sky), this is for you.  Requires intermediate Windows skills.

Digital Photography

Get an overview of downloading, organizing and editing your digital photos. We'll focus on Google's free photo-management software, Picasa, and on Photoshop Elements as a more powerful image editor. Prerequisite for this class is basic skill in navigating in Windows.
