Stay Home, Have Fun!

Join us for digital storytimes!

Storytime is one of our favorite things here at the Library. While everyone is safe at home, we're making sure your family can still receive early literacy services by offering storytime digitally. Storytimes helps children foster a lifelong love of books, reading and learning--and can offer comfort and bonding in strange and uncertain times.

Watch our pre-recorded virtual storytimes all from this page, or starting in May, you can join us live on Facebook! Our children's team will be offering virtual storytimes all throughout May on Facebook Live. Join us Monday through Friday to enjoy the following:

  • Art Storytime, Monday's from 2:15 PM - 2:30 PM
  • Baby Storytime, Tuesday's from 11:15 AM - 11:30 AM
  • Family Storytime, Wednesday's from 10:30 AM - 10:45 AM
  • Disability Playgroup, Thursday's from 11:00 AM - 11:15 AM
  • Cuentos en español, Friday's 10:30 AM - 10:45 AM

Our digital storytimes offer the same literacy tips and activities as our traditional storytimes, so enjoy them as a family. They're also great to play for your children while making lunch or taking care of something around the house. Parents are their childrens' first and most important teachers and the Arlington Public Library is always here to support you as your children grow.

Make Chalk Paint

Learn to make chalk paint with Ms. Ashley! This fun activity is super easy and requires only a few ingredients from your kitchen.

Try it yourself: Take your chalk paint outside and paint natural objects like pinecones, leaves, and even tree trunks. Painting different objects encourages your children to explore different textures in the world around them.

Goldie and the Three Bears

Watch the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, as presented by some of your favorite childrens' librarians!

Try it yourself: Pick a favorite story to act out as a family. Encourage critical thinking by asking your child how they think characters are feeling throughout the story. Older silbings might enjoy filming your finished product, just like our librarians did!

Make Play Dough at Home

Join Ms. Ashley to make different types of Play Dough at home.

Try it yourself: These different kinds of dough are so fun to play with, and they're a great way to explore textures while building fine motor skills. You can work on vocabulary and language acquisition by asking your child to describe the different textures, colors and scents they experience!

What is Process Art?

Our children's team uses process art in most early learning programs like Little Messy Art and Drop-In Art. In this video, Miss Juli explains what process art is, the benefits of it, and how YOU can do it at home!

Movement Storytime

Join the Arlington Public Library as we move to a story. Special thank you to author Amanda Lynch for allowing us to use Breathe Baby, Breathe for this video!

Try it yourself: Every child knows that movement is a great way to use up energy! Find ways to encourage your children in movement so they can stay busy at home.

DIY Storytime with Tips from a Librarian!

While you're home with your kids, you can do your own storytimes! Here are some pro tips from Ms. Yuli for storytimes that will encourage kids to love books and get those wiggles out.

Try it yourself: Use what you already have around the home to make storytime special. Choose a special sheet, blanket, tablecloth, rug, towel, sleeping bag or any other piece of fabric to use for every storytime. If none of those are great options, try moving couch cushions to the floor, read outside or on your patio, or sit together on your bed. Whatever you chose, your kids will be so excited to have this special time with you!

Baby Storytime

Babies start learning from the moment they enter the world. Ms. Juli is here with  some songs, baby signs, and tips for you to enjoy learning with your baby at home!

Try it yourself: Language development begins at birth, and sign language is a great way to help your baby learn. Sign language gives babies tools to express their feelings, needs and emotions before they're ready to talk. Get started by adding some simple signs, like the ones we use in storytime, to your daily routine.

The Three Little Pigs Storytime In English

Miss Juli invites everyone to sing along with her and enjoy the classic tale of 'The Three Little Pigs'.

Try it yourself: Act out your favorite stories with puppets! Try making your own puppets with simple craft materials from around the house. Or you can draw faces on your fingers to use your hands. Acting out stories help children learn the structure of stories, which have beginnings, middles and ends. This helps young learners know what to expect when reading a book!

This story time entertains children with books, rhymes, and songs ... completely in Spanish! Parents will be introduced to effective tools to entertain, engage, and help their children grow.

Try it yourself:  Already got the ABC's down? Try learning them in a new language! Ask your kiddos to look at pictures in the book and tell you what they think is going on by just looking at the illustrations.

Spring Storytime

Join Ms. Yuli for a spring storytime full of bunnies, chicks, and all things spring.

Try it yourself: Pick some favorite books to read in a new place. Whether you read them on a blanket in the grass like Ms. Yuli did, in a chair on your patio, or just in a different room than normal, changing your environment for storytime adds new sensory experiences to reading time.

Make Sensory Bottles at Home

Learn to make sensory bottles with simple items from around your home! Ms. Ashley is showing us this fun activity that can be a calming escape.

Try it yourself: When you gather collections from a walk or around your house, ask your child what makes them similar and what makes them different. These discussions are a great way to build critical thinking skills.

Disabilities Playgroup

Our Disabilities Playgroup offers a welcoming atmosphere for young children with disabilities and their caregivers. Ms. Ashley misses all her friends from playgroup and hopes to be able to see everyone soon! Join her today for a fun sing-along.

Try it yourself: It can be stressful when routines are interrupted and we can't do the things we normally love to do. Be creative and try to find ways to recreate experiences for your children. After watching virtual storytime, try video calling a family member you usually visit, or look at pictures online of your favorite places!

Sing along and enjoy this much-loved story in Spanish! Ms. Yuliana is sharing one of our favorite stories. | Try it yourself: Read, write, sing, talk and play with your child in their first language--Spanish, if that's what you speak at home. These early literacy activities will build their learning skills and eventually prepare them to learn other languages.

Music Storytime

Music and singing develops language skills! Songs often slow down language so children can hear the different sounds in words.  Plus, songs build vocabulary through repetition and exposure to new ideas. Watch this fun storytime with Ms. Juli for some musical early literacy fun.

Try it yourself: sing songs with your children to encourage their learning. Whether it's a song you heard at storytime, a favorite from your own childhood, or a current hit you've had on repeat, music will help your child learn.

Glow in the Dark Storytime

Enjoy magical stories in this glow in the dark storytime! Try watching with the lights off for extra fun.

Try it yourself: Use your imaginations and make up a brand new story with your child. Take turns saying what happens next! Involving children in conversations (or storytelling) helps them build oral language, one of the most important early literacy skills.

Emotions Storytime

Is your child working through some big emotions right now? Join Ms. Shannon in this storytime about different ways we might be feeling, plus ways we can cope with those feelings!

Try it yourself: Make time to talk to your children about how they're feeling. Do your best to remain calm and age-appropriate. Kids feel safe and reassured when they know they can talk to you about their worries.

Find More on Facebook
